Ada East Assembly receives GH¢250,000 from MIIF, pursues outstanding arrears

Ada, Jan. 22, GNA – The Ada East District Assembly has received GH¢250,000 from the Mineral Income Investment Fund (MIIF) as part of payments due the assembly from the operations of Electrochem Ghana Limited (EGL).

Mr Kenneth Kabu Kofi Kanor, the Ada East District Chief Executive (DCE), disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, describing the payment as a significant milestone for the assembly.

Mr Kanor noted that it has been a long time since the assembly had received funds through the MIIF arrangement, and efforts were ongoing to recover additional arrears owed to the district.

He said further payments were expected from MIIF in relation to the operations of Electrochem Ghana Limited, which began commercial salt production in January 2021 in the Ada West District.

He explained that although the company was yet to commence operations in the Ada East District, the assembly was already benefiting because the company’s 41,000-acre concession spans both Ada East and Ada West districts.

The DCE commended the company for fulfilling its tax and royalty obligations to the Ada State, disclosing, however, that the assembly had engaged legal services to pursue outstanding mineral-related benefits accrued over the years.

He said the recovery of the arrears would strengthen the assembly’s revenue base and support development initiatives in the district.

Mr Kanor urged residents to remain calm and optimistic, assuring them that increased revenue inflows would translate into improved development outcomes for the district.

Electrochem Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the McDan Group of Companies, commenced commercial salt production in January 2021 after securing a 15-year lease over the 41,000-acre concession.

The company had disclosed at the time that it had invested about US$120 million to revive the Songor Lagoon for its salt production operations.
