Istanbul, Dec 15, (dpa/GNA) – Turkish authorities, have convicted a well-known Turkish pop girl band of “shameless behaviour”.
The Istanbul court, handed down a suspended sentence of three months and 22 days to the six singers of the group Manifest, the state news agency Anadolu reported on Monday.
A singer who made a guest appearance at one of the group’s concerts, was also given a suspended sentence.
The trigger was a concert in Istanbul in September in front of thousands of fans. The six singers, all in their early 20s, wore skimpy clothing resembling lingerie during their performance, and thrilled the audience with their dance routines.
According to the daily newspaper Cumhuriyet, the court’s reasoning included that the singers had made movements on stage that were reminiscent of sexual intercourse.
After the investigation became public in September, the singers said that they had not intended to offend anyone or ignore sensitivities with their performance. They were saddened by the situation, and said the band’s goal is to bring people of all ages and attitudes together through music and dance.
Manifest was founded just under a year ago at a talent show on YouTube, and has since experienced a meteoric rise.
