Adidome (V/R), Dec. 2, GNA – Mr Guggisberg Fiagbenu, Assembly Member of the Adidome Central Electoral Area and Chairman of the Adidome–Juapong Transport Union, has issued a strong appeal to all drivers, canoe operators and commercial motor riders (okada) to elevate safety standards as the Christmas season approaches.
He said the festive period traditionally records high mobility, increased commercial activity and heightened road traffic pressure, making it critical for transport operators to adopt responsible practices to safeguard commuters and residents.
Mr Fiagbenu noted that transport operators remain the first point of contact for many travelers, and their conduct plays a decisive role in ensuring a peaceful and accident-free celebration.
He therefore urged them to avoid speeding, overloading, drunk driving and the use of unlicensed motorbikes or rickety vehicles, saying such behaviours expose passengers to unnecessary danger.
He stressed the importance of compliance with safety protocols along the Volta River, particularly for canoe riders who ferry traders and schoolchildren.
He called on them to provide life jackets, avoid night trips, and ensure their vessels are properly maintained before embarking on any journey.
“The wellbeing of our people must remain our topmost priority during this festive season. Every action we take as transport operators either protects or endangers a life, and we must choose the path of safety,” he said.
Mr Fiagbenu appealed to the National Road Safety Authority, the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department and local authorities to intensify community sensitisation, enforce traffic regulations and increase visibility at accident-prone zones in the district.
“We have recorded several accidents this year, the more reason they must be cautious as the season approaches.”
He said the Assembly, in collaboration with the Transport Union, will continue engaging stakeholders to promote responsible transport services, reduce accident risks and ensure a safe and enjoyable Christmas for all residents.
