Koforidua, Dec. 05, GNA-Ms Gifty Nyarko, National President of the Local Government Service Association of Physical Planners (LoGSAPP), has emphasised the need for walking and cycling infrastructure to ensure safe accessibility for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).
Ms Nyarko also the African Ambassador for Inclusive Urban Governance and Climate Resilient Development in a statement marking World Sustainable Transport Day, copied to the Ghana News Agency at Koforidua in the Eastern Region asked for coordinated action from stakeholders to promote inclusive transport systems.
She stressed the importance of developing sustainable, climate-resilient, and inclusive transport systems in African cities, integrating climate resilience into transport planning, and ensuring infrastructure could withstand extreme weather conditions.
Ms Nyarko suggested engagements with communities, especially vulnerable populations, to ensure transport solutions met diverse needs and supported policies fostering low-carbon, equitable, and sustainable mobility.
She emphasised investing in safe, efficient, and affordable public transport networks to reduce emissions and beautify cities.
The transport sector contributes approximately 24 percent of energy-related carbon emissions globally, with road transport responsible for the majority, significantly affecting respiratory and cardiovascular health in urban populations, according to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) 2023 report, he said.
Madam Nyarko urged governments, urban planners, and stakeholders to collaborate in creating transport systems serving people and the planet, emphasising sustainable transport as a cornerstone for economic growth, social equity, environmental sustainability, and public health.
