Israeli drone strike kill three in south Lebanon

Beirut, Dec 23, (dpa/GNA) – Three people were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, Lebanese authorities said on Monday.

The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that the airstrike hit a car in the southern province of Sidon.

An Israeli army spokesman stated that several Hezbollah members had been attacked near Sidon.

The Shiite organization has not yet commented.A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has been in place for over a year.

However, the Israeli military continues its almost daily operations in Lebanon.

It accuses Hezbollah of reorganizing in the south of the country.

According to recent statements from a spokeswoman for UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, there is no evidence of Hezbollah rearming in the region.

According to the ceasefire agreement, the first phase of Hezbollah’s disarmament is to be completed by the end of the year. Accordingly, the Lebanese army is to bring the military facilities and weapons of the Iranian-backed organization Hezbollah under its control by then.

These facilities are located in the area south of the Litani River, approximately 30 kilometres from the Israeli border.

According to recent statements from the Lebanese government, the first phase is virtually complete.

Israel and its ally, the United States, are insisting on adherence to the deadline. Observers consider further strikes against Hezbollah possible.
