Tamale, Dec 20, GNA – The Concerned Parents’ Association of Islamic Science Senior High School, Tamale has handed over a renovated boys’ dormitory to the Management of the school following a successful parent-funded intervention to improve student accommodation and welfare.
The renovation, which cost a total of GH¢184,742.00, was completed within two and a half months through contributions from parents in collaboration with school authorities.
Mr Charles Ayendago, Vice Chairperson of the Association, speaking during the handing over ceremony at the school’s premises, said the intervention was necessitated by the poor state of the dormitory, which became a major concern to parents.
Mr Ayendago said the deteriorating condition of the facility affected students’ comfort and parents’ peace of mind.
He said “Our children live, study and grow here. The dormitory is their second home, and when that home is unsafe or uncomfortable, learning suffers.”
He said upon assuming office on August 30, 2025, the executive of the Association prioritized addressing urgent infrastructural challenges, with the boys’ dormitory identified as a critical need.
He explained that the renovation was carried out in three phases beginning with roofing works to prevent flooding of upper floors at a cost of GH¢89,015.00.
Mr Ayendago said the second phase involved electrical rewiring, installation of fittings, fans and bulbs, masonry works and repairs to doors at a cost of GH¢64,615.00 while the final phase focused on painting and finishing works costing GH¢31,132.00.
He said the project also led to the establishment of the Association’s secretariat equipped with basic office facilities to enhance communication between parents and the association.
He appealed for proper maintenance to preserve the investment urging students to take responsibility for protecting the facility describing it as their own home.
Mr Ayendago said parents had agreed to contribute GH¢300 per head towards the purchase of a water tanker to help address water challenges of the school as students prepared for examinations.
Mr Kingsley Adzraku, Deputy Northern Regional Director of Education commended the Association for its initiative and described the intervention as a model of community participation in education.
He said parental involvement remained critical to improving educational outcomes adding that infrastructure, discipline and student welfare were essential compliments to academic instruction.
He urged other parent associations to emulate the example of Islamic Science SHS by supporting school development within their means.
Alhaji Mohammed Issifu, Headmaster of Islamic Science Senior High School, who received the keys to the facility on behalf of the school, expressed appreciation to the Association and parents for their commitment and sacrifices.
He described the renovation as timely and impactful noting that the improved dormitory would enhance students’ comfort, safety and academic focus.
He said “This support will significantly improve the living conditions of our students and contribute positively to teaching and learning.”
He assured parents and stakeholders that management would ensure regular maintenance of the facility and make judicious use of all resources entrusted to the school.
