Washington, Nov 23, (dpa/GNA) – US President, Donald Trump, has again accused Ukraine of showing a lack of gratitude for his efforts to end the war and said Europe, bears some responsibility for the continuation of Russia’s invasion.
“UKRAINE ‘LEADERSHIP’ HAS EXPRESSED ZERO GRATITUDE FOR OUR EFFORTS, AND EUROPE CONTINUES TO BUY OIL FROM RUSSIA,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, as US, Ukrainian and European delegations met in Switzerland to discuss the president’s peace plan.
Trump, who said he could end the conflict swiftly when he returned to the White House in January, has repeatedly claimed that Kiev does not adequately acknowledge US support.
Shortly after Trump’s post, Zelensky wrote on X: “Ukraine is grateful to the United States, to every American heart, and personally to President Trump for the assistance that … has been saving Ukrainian lives.”
“We thank everyone in Europe, in the G7, and in the G20 who is helping us defend life. It is important to preserve the support,” he continued.
In February, Trump publicly chastised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during an explosive meeting at the White House, with Vice President JD Vance joining him in rebuking the Ukrainian leader on live television.
Trump has also repeatedly accused the European Union of indirectly financing Russia’s invasion by continuing to import Russian oil. The EU has imposed broad embargoes on Russian energy since Moscow’s invasion, though several exemptions remain.
Meanwhile, talks in Geneva on Trump’s contentious new plan for ending the conflict were under way on Sunday.
Trump has given Zelensky until Thursday to agree in principle to the proposal, which would require Ukraine to make a number of concessions that it has long rejected.
Ukraine’s European allies have pushed back on the plan in its current form, and Zelensky said “alternatives” will be presented to the US during the talks.
The 28-point document would require Kiev to cede large swathes of territory to Russia, and limit the size of its military, among other measures.
