Nigeria coach accuse DR Congo of ‘voodoo’ in penalty shoot-out

Berlin, Nov 17, (dpa/GNA) – Nigeria coach, Éric Chelle, has accused the DR Congo of doing “some voodoo” during the penalty shoot-out that ended his side’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“During all the penalty decision, the guy of Congo did some Voodoo. Every time. Every time. So this is why I was a little nervous after him,” Chelle told reporters, explaining why tempers flared between him and the DR Congo staff.

When asked what he saw, Chelle waved his right arm but couldn’t confirm the specifics of his claim.

“Something like that (waving his arm). I don’t know if it’s water or something like that,” he said.

DR Congo secured a spot in the inter-confederation play-offs for the 2026 World Cup, after beating Nigeria 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw on Sunday.

The defeat, which came against a side ranked 19 places below them, condemned Nigeria to a third missed World Cup since 2006.

The inter-confederation play-offs take place in March with the draw on Thursday.
