Accra, Nov. 12, GNA – The New Horizon Special School will on Saturday, November 15, hold its annual Art Exhibition at the school’s premises.

The event would showcase creative works produced by students and young adults of the institution as part of efforts to promote inclusion and celebrate the abilities of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Founded in 1972, the NHSS is one of Ghana’s oldest institutions dedicated to the education and empowerment of individuals with special needs.

In a release issued to the Ghana News Agency, on Wednesday, in Accra, it said over the past five decades, the NHSS has supported and positively impacted more than 3,000 individuals through structured learning programmes, life skills development, and vocational training.

It said the school’s academic programme catered to children aged five to 18 years, while adults above 18 participate in its vocational training initiative, which provides practical skills in basketry, doormat making, sewing, batik and tie-dye, and Kente weaving.

The Art Exhibition was introduced in the early 1990s as part of the school’s effort to combat stigma and demonstrate the creativity and potential of persons with intellectual disabilities.

“Initially supported by expatriates and international volunteers, the exhibition has over the years gained growing participation and patronage from Ghanaians, reflecting greater community awareness and acceptance.”

It said the 2025 edition would be a “vibrant display of creativity and skill,” featuring a wide range of handmade items available for sale.

“The event is a celebration of our students’ abilities and a testament to what can be achieved through empowerment and opportunity,” the statement said.

“The school invites the general public, partners, and organizations to attend and support the exhibition, and called for partnerships with media and stakeholders to help promote inclusion and raise awareness of the talents of persons with special needs.”
