Tel Aviv/Beirut, Nov 6, (dpa.GNA) – Israel’s military said on Thursday, it has begun attacking Hezbollah military targets in southern Lebanon.
The affected areas included the villages of Taybeh, Tir Dabba and Ayta al-Jabal, Lebanese security sources said. A photographer for dpa, reported that a building in Tayr Debba was hit.
According to the Lebanese health ministry, one person was wounded in the strikes on Tayr Debba.
Meanwhile, new Israeli army warnings were issued towards the areas in Zatar al Sharqieh and Kfar Dounine, in the Nabatiyeh district.
The sounds of loud explosions were heard, as strikes targeted Zawtar al Sharqieh.
People were seen jumping in their cars, and heading towards safer areas in southern Lebanon to spend the night.
Several private schools in the Nabatiyeh region said they will close on Friday, due to the current situation, in order to avoid exposing students and teachers to any danger.
Also some Lebanese University branches in south Lebanon, issued the same statement and said “due to the ongoing Israeli aggression against the villages of the South, and in order to protect our students, staff, and professors, the exams scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, will be postponed to Tuesday, the 11th of this month.”
An Israeli official was quoted by the Saudi channel Al-Arabiya that, they do not intend to expand or escalate the airstrikes in Lebanon.
The Israeli army had previously warned residents to evacuate certain buildings in the three villages, ahead of airstrikes on Hezbollah infrastructure, but said that the move did not constitute a “large-scale evacuation” order.
In a statement posted in Arabic on the social media platform X, the Israeli army said the Iranian-backed militia was attempting to resume operations in the affected areas.
A dpa journalist on the ground said the warnings triggered panic, with parents rushing to schools to collect children and streets being blocked. “I can’t stand living in fear any more,” one woman said.
The Lebanese Health Ministry reported one dead and eight injured, in a separate Israeli strike earlier in the day near the port city of Tyre. Israel said that attack also targeted Hezbollah infrastructure and members.
Israel, supported by the United States, is pressing for the full disarmament of Hezbollah. A ceasefire has technically been in place since late November last year, but Israel accuses Hezbollah of rearming and has continued near-daily strikes.
US envoy Tom Barrack and Israeli officials have recently warned of additional measures, if Hezbollah does not disarm.
