Accra, Nov. 21, GNA – The Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team has launched a series of security operations in Tamale and surrounding communities to clamp down on the illicit sale and distribution of drugs and curb robbery incidents.
Led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Bawa Abdul Jalil, the team is expected to reinforce ongoing security efforts and respond to public concerns.
A police brief said the operations include visibility patrols, intelligence gathering and other security interventions aimed at enhancing public safety and restoring public confidence.
The team paid courtesy calls on the Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, and the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Adam Abubakar Takoro, who both expressed appreciation for the deployment and commended the initiative.
They urged the officers to work with urgency, dedication and professionalism to help reduce crime in the region.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Wisdom Lavoe, the Northern Regional Police Commander, welcomed the team and outlined key emerging security threats.
These include the increased sale of illicit drugs and contraband goods, a rise in drug abuse among the youth, and a spate of robbery incidents in parts of the region.
He encouraged the officers to demonstrate strong “esprit de corps,” stressing that teamwork, discipline and unity of purpose were essential for successful operations.
