Hands found on German motorway belong to mother from refugee shelter

Berlin, Nov 18, (dpa/GNA) – German police said on Tuesday that they have identified, but not located the woman, whose severed hands were discovered on a motorway a day earlier.

She is a 32-year-old woman who, along with her infant, is registered at an asylum seeker accommodation centre in the western city of Bonn, police and prosecutors announced.

The infant is in the care of the state.

Police and prosecutors said an extensive search for the woman has so far yielded no results, and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

A homicide investigation was launched following the grisly discovery.

A driver on the A45 motorway had contacted the police, following the sighting. A police patrol responding to the alert, then found the severed hands near Olpe, east of Cologne.

Authorities have appealed for witnesses who may have seen anything suspicious to come forward.
