UN human rights office calls for reckoning once Gaza peace achieved

Geneva, Oct 10, (dpa/GNA) – The UN human rights office in Geneva, has welcomed the agreement between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, in the Gaza Strip, but said accountability must still take place.

“This momentum can and should lead to a permanent cessation of hostilities,” said spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani.

The office is calling for a legal reckoning for the Gaza conflict, which was triggered by the Hamas-led attacks on Israel before the Jewish state retaliated with a two-year campaign.

“As part of the recovery, there must also be a comprehensive process of transitional justice, with accountability for the gross violations and abuses of international human rights law, and serious violations of international humanitarian law we have witnessed,” she said.

“Fulfilling the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and ensuring Palestinians and Israelis can live in peace and security, must remain the ultimate goal of the process.”
