Mafia boss on the run for five years held in southern Italy

Rome, Oct 8, (dpa/GNA) – Italian police detained a Mafia boss on Tuesday, who had been on the run for the past five years, arresting him in the city of Foggia in Apulia in south-eastern Italy.

The 39-year-old man was located on the outskirts of the city, following months of investigation and a large deployment of forces, police said.

The suspect has been linked to the Società Foggiana, a Mafia organization in Apulia that focuses on Foggia and its environs, operating in refuse collection, weapons dealing and prostitution. It also carries out armed robberies.

The detained Mafia boss had been surprised in his sleep and had surrendered without a fight, police said.

A pistol with its serial number filed off and loaded with six rounds, was found with him.

The man had previously been handed a 12-year sentence for Mafia crimes.
