Israel confirms body handed over by Hamas is Eliyahu Margalit

Tel Aviv, Oct 19, (dpa/GNA) – The body handed over by Palestinian Islamist group Hamas has been identified as Eliyahu Margalit, a resident of Kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel, the Israeli government said on Saturday.

Margalit, 75, was murdered during the terrorist attack by the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas on October 7, 2023, and his body was taken to the Gaza Strip.

His daughter was kidnapped alive and later released, as part of an agreement on the handover of hostages.

Late on Friday, the Israeli military stated that the coffin had been handed over to staff from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

According to the ceasefire agreement, Hamas must hand over a total of 28 bodies.

The bodies of 18 hostages remain in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas claims that it is difficult for them to find the bodies because they are buried under the rubble of bombed buildings and tunnels.

On Monday, the Islamists released the last 20 living hostages. The first phase of the ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas, initiated by US President Donald Trump, includes the release and handover of all living and dead hostages.
