Gomoa Fetteh(C/R), Oct. 29, GNA- The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has launched the maiden edition of its Senior Nursing and Midwifery Managers Conference.
The event was held at the Pentecost Convention Center in Gomoa Fetteh, in the Central Region of Ghana with a call for the professionals to embrace a transformational agenda rooted in digital advancement, policy advocacy, and nurse-led interventions.
The five-day conference, running from October 27th to 31st, is geared towards preparing healthcare leaders to tackle the critical challenges posed by staff migration and the rapid digitalisation of the health sector.
Prof. Lydia Aziato, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and Chairperson for the opening ceremony, warned that insufficient reforms across pre-service, rotation, and in-service training threatened the quality of future care.
She noted that the current era of AI, digitalisation, and electronic health records demanded that the nursing fraternity urgently re-strategised to be ready for future crises.
Prof. Aziato charged the professionals to champion a new agenda focused on care that was simultaneously quality, timely, and satisfactory.
Dr. Wilfred Ochan, Country Representative of UNFPA, called for a professional revolution in the nursing profession, stating that modern nursing required vision, advocacy, and inter-sectoral collaboration, moving beyond technical skill.
He called for an aggressive advocacy for representation of nurse and midwife leaders in decision-making structures in the health sector from the lowest to the highest levels.
The UNFPA Country Representative said such a move would ensure that policies, budgets, and priorities reflected the realities of frontline health work.
He emphasised that forming strong professional alliances was essential to amplify collective voices of nurses to overcome issues like inadequate staffing and low participation in decision-making.
Mrs. Eva Mensah, Director of Nursing and Midwifery at the Ghana Health Service (GHS), highlighted steps already underway under the Green GHS initiative to enhance healthcare in the country.
“A digitally-enabled, data-driven strategy. Key initiatives we plan to roll out include the E-Learning platforms for protocols, developing new safe-care models for School Nursing Services, and formalising Home Care under the GHS structure,” she said.
She highlighted the launch of the GHS Midwifery Monitoring and Evaluation System (MRS) for data collection and the Nature App, a cell technology-based tool for tracking high-risk pregnancies and offering teleconsultation, with 12,000 nurses already completing a mandatory e-learning module.
