Berlin, Oct 8, (dpa/GNA) – A large emergency response is under way in the German town of Mainaschaff, after a gas cloud was released, following an incident at an industrial plant, authorities said on Tuesday evening.
The cloud has drifted over the nearby town of Aschaffenburg, prompting officials to urge residents to stay indoors and bring people in from outside.
The Federal Office of Civil Protection said the gas cloud may be toxic.
Residents were asked to assist children and vulnerable people, take in those at risk, and follow police and fire service announcements.
Local authorities also advised keeping windows and doors closed, and turning off ventilation and air conditioning systems.
The cause of the incident at the plant and its full extent remain unclear.
Mainaschaff and Aschaffenburg are neighbouring towns just a few kilometres apart, with the major city of Frankfurt located to the north-west.
