Sydney, Oct 29, (dpa/GNA) – A cruise passenger was accidentally left behind, during a shore excursion on an island in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and died.
The Australian broadcaster ABC News, reported on Wednesday that the 80-year-old passenger, onboard the Coral Adventurer, had taken part in a group hike on Lizard Island, organized by the cruise operator.
During the hike, she told the group that she could not continue, but would return to the ship on her own. The fact that she did not do so initially went unnoticed on the ship, which set sail.
Hours later, according to the report, it was noticed that the woman was not aboard the ship. It then turned back and she was reported missing.
Authorities launched a search on Saturday evening that continued into the night. She was found dead on Sunday.
The police described the woman’s death as “sudden and not suspicious”; ABC did not provide any further details about the cause of death.
