At least 40 killed in South Africa bus crash

Cape Town, Oct 13, (dpa/GNA) – At least 40 people were killed in a bus crash in South Africa’s northern Limpopo province, authorities said on Monday, adding that dozens more were injured, some of them seriously.

Rescue teams said the death toll from the Sunday evening accident was expected to rise, as recovery efforts continued.

Local government and road traffic officials said the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road, plunged down an embankment and overturned.

A 10-month-old baby was among the dead.

The passengers were from Malawi and Zimbabwe, and were travelling home, officials said.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, offered condolences to the governments of the two countries, and to the families of the victims.
