Otaakrom, (Ashanti), Sept. 1, GNA – The Women’s Wing of the Islamic Mission Secretariat (IMS) has lauded the government’s efforts to stem gold smuggling in the country.

Hajia Mariam Suleiman-Nketia, the National Secretary of the Wing, gave the commendation, saying the move would help control the growing illegal mining activities and the attendant consequences on the nation.

She expressed worry that illegal mining activities continued to cause extensive destruction to the environment, pollute and destroy water sources and biodiversity.

Hajia Suleiman-Nketiah also called on the government to do more in the fight against corruption by strengthening institutions, worrying that corruption remained inimical to progressive growth and development.

She was speaking at a durbar to climax the 27th Annual National Women’s Conference of the Wing held at Otaakrom in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

The three-day conference held between Thursday August 28 and Sunday August 31 2025 was on the theme: “The role of a Muslim woman in nation building through commitment”, and attended mostly by Muslim women and girls”.

Hajia Suleiman-Nketiah said the Wing recognized and appreciated the government’s efforts towards its reset Ghana agenda, describing those efforts as commendable.

She emphasised that rebuilding the nation remained shared responsibility, requiring citizen participation, and urged Muslim women to commit themselves in building better homes and the larger society.

Hajia said the IMS was also committed to offer employable skills training opportunities for Muslim women and girls, as well as working to improve the education and health sectors.

She said women empowerment remained central to national progress and called on the government to empower Muslim women economically.
