Takoradi, Sept. 5, GNA – Traders at the Jubilee Park market in Takoradi have been advised not to overstock perishables food stuff but buy in sizeable quantities.
The counsel, when taken in good faith would ensure that traders do not lose monies or inject deadly chemicals to preserve these food stuffs at the peril of the consumer.
Dr. Martin Kusi, The Regional Director of the Food and Drugs Authority gave the counsel during a public education campaign at the market to mark World Food Day.
The event, which sought to impress on traders to adopt healthy food hygiene practices was under the auspices of the Food and Agriculture Organisation.
Dr. Kusi also warned Cold stores operators from switching off their freezers while they are stocked with fish, describing the practice as a punishable offense.
He educated that the more the freezers were turned off, the more the quality of the fishes reduced.
The Regional FDA Director said, “you cannot operate a Cold store without a standby generator, the same way you cannot sell the fresh fishes without proper storage mechanisms”.
The market traders were also advised to stop adding Sudan iv to oils, and introduction of other foreign substances and ingredients to groundnut paste, fruits and vegetables among other harmful practices.
