Aflao (V/R), Aug. 28, GNA – A Traders’ group, Cross-Border Women Traders Association (CBWTA), has expressed deep appreciation to Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, for his bold leadership and commitment to construct the Aflao Market.

In a statement signed by Mr. Oscar Akaba-Norvixoxo, the National Coordinator of the Association, the group described the planned ultra-modern, multi-purpose market facility as a “transformative step” toward improving the daily working conditions of thousands of women engaged in cross-border trade.

“This project promises to restore dignity, ensure safety, and provide a more structured environment for women traders who have long operated under challenging and often unsafe conditions,” the statement read.

The CBWTA said the redevelopment aligns with the broader goals of ECOWAS and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by strengthening regional trade and economic growth.

“We extend our sincere thanks to Hon. Ablakwa for recognising the central role women in informal trade play in the local and regional economy,” it added.

While welcoming the initiative, the Association called for greater inclusion of women traders in the planning, design, and implementation of trade infrastructure projects.

“Our lived experiences and daily interaction with trade systems uniquely position us to offer insight into what works and what doesn’t,” they noted, urging government agencies, local authorities, and development partners to create formal platforms for consultation.

They also appealed for similar investments at other key border posts and for stronger efforts to formalise and empower women in informal cross-border trade.

“Inclusive and participatory planning is essential to ensure that infrastructure meets the real needs of those who use it,” the statement emphasised.

A $30 million grant agreement was signed between the Government of Ghana and the Government of China to construct an ultra-modern market in Aflao in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.
