Accra, Aug 01, GNA- The second edition of the Democracy Cup is set to kick off with a highly anticipated curtain-raiser match between Parliament and the Judiciary on Friday, August 29, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

The exhibition game promises to be a thrilling encounter between two arms of government, with Majority Leader, Mr Mahama Ayariga, leading Parliament’s team.

Mr Bernard Ahiafor, First Deputy Speaker, announced the fixture when he read the closing remarks of Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, during proceedings in Parliament on Friday.

He said, “Honourable members, following a successful launch of the second edition of the Democracy Cup, I wish to bring to your attention that on Friday, August 29, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, we are excited to announce a curtain-raiser match between Parliament and the Judiciary.

“Parliament’s team will be captained by the Majority Leader, Honourable Mahama Ayariga. The judiciary is yet to provide a captain of their team, but we are confident in our abilities to compete when they bring their team,” Mr Ahiafor said.

The Democracy Cup is a parliamentary initiative that leverages the unifying power of football to promote democratic values, civic participation, and peaceful coexistence.

The tournament, introduced in 2024, has gained widespread attention, and this year’s event is expected to build on that momentum.

The curtain-raiser match would precede the main Democracy Cup clash between Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics at the Accra Sports Stadium.

With training for Parliament’s team set to commence in earnest in the coming days, fans could look forward to an exciting encounter between the two arms of government.

The Democracy Cup continues to be a platform for promoting national unity and peaceful coexistence through sports, and this year’s edition is expected to be just as thrilling as the first.

Speaker Bagbin on Thursday, July 24, 2025, officially launched the second edition of Parliament’s Democracy Cup at the D.F. Annan Auditorium.

The launch of the 2025 edition attracted prominent personalities, including former Black Stars players, Members of Parliament, and Executive Council members of the Ghana Football Association.

Parliament adjourned Sine die on Friday, August 01, after 10 weeks of sitting in the Second Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament.

The Meeting commenced on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Mr Ahiafor, who presided over the proceedings, announced on the Floor of the House.
