Accra, Aug. 23, GNA – The Ghana Police Service has denied reports suggesting that an officer is being dismissed in connection with violence during the Ablekuma North by-election rerun.
In a statement issued by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, the Service described such reports as false and misleading, noting that internal disciplinary processes are still ongoing.
“The Ghana Police Service has monitored reports in sections of the media making false claims that one of its officers who was involved in an infraction during the Ablekuma North by-election is facing dismissal,” the statement said.
“We wish to note that no such decision has been made.
“We further wish to explain for the information of the general public that the internal disciplinary procedures of the Ghana Police Service is a quasi-judicial process, the outcome of which can therefore not be pre-determined,” it added.
The statement explained that the Service’s disciplinary rules allowed for various sanctions in the event of misconduct, with decisions made on a case-by-case basis following a disciplinary trial.
“We would like to once again assure the public that the Police Service will continue to follow the due process of the law to ensure justice, law and order,” it said.
The clarification comes in the wake of an incident during the July 11, 2025 by-election at Ablekuma North, held after the December 7, 2024 general election failed to produce a clear winner.
The rerun was marred by violence, during which Madam Hawa Koomson, a former Member of Parliament from the opposition New Patriotic Party, and some journalists were reportedly attacked.
A police officer who allegedly assaulted a journalist was subsequently withdrawn from the election duty and, in line with internal procedures, was interdicted and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation.
