Atwima Nwabiagya South MP pushes for completion of abandoned roads

Accra, August 21, GNA – Madam Shirley Kyei, Member of Parliament for Atwima Nwabiagya South, has expressedconcern over abandoned road projects in her constituency.

Speaking during a Public Accounts Committee session, she urged the Department of Urban Roads to provide timelines forthe completion of the projects in the Ashanti Region.

Madam Kyei cited the Auditor-General’s report, which indicatedthat the Department of Urban Roads in Kumasi had spent morethan GH¢62 million on various road projects, many of which had been left unattended for about 48 to 56 months.

She highlighted the Maakro/Agogo road project, which she said had been abandoned for a long time.

Responding to the concerns, Department of Urban Roadsofficials noted that some road projects in the region had stalled due to delayed payments to contractors.

They explained that the identified project had become “more expensive” to complete as a result of the delay, adding that there had been recommendations for some contracts to be terminated and re-awarded.

The officials expressed confidence that the repackaged contracts would proceed “by the end of the year”, subject to the availability of funds.

Highlighting the inconvenience posed by the abandoned project, Madam Kyei, encouraged the Road Ministry to prioritise thecompletion of projects in the region, noting that funds for the projects were available.
