Assin North DCE slams some contractors over shoddy work

Assin Bereku (C/R), Aug 11, GNA – Mr Sylvester Amakye, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Assin North has expressed extreme disappointment and frustration over shoddy work done on a classroom block and a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound.

The DCE described the three-unit classroom block at Assin Oboba Krokrowa and a CHPS Compound at Assin Wawase  as “substandard and structurally weak.”

He made the observation after a site inspection of the projects, and expressed dismay over the visibly weak structural columns, extensive cracks and deteriorating ceilings posing serious safety risks.

Mr Amakye noted that because the structures had become potential death traps, an independent engineer had been engaged to assess the structural integrity of both projects, which started under the previous administration.

The DCE emphasised that shoddy construction works undermined the government’s commitment to delivering lasting infrastructure.

Though he declined to name the contractors, he said formal invitation had been sent to the contractors working on both projects for discussion and possibly find solutions to the numerous problems at hand.

He cautioned the contractors to respond to the invitation and failure to adhere to it, would result in contract termination a legal action.

Mr Kwasi Okyere, resident at Assin Krokrowa, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said, he would not allow his children to sit in such a classroom, citing too many infrastructural defects and advised the contractor to do remedial works.
