Akatsi (V/R), Aug. 21, GNA – Mr Bernard Ahiafor, Member of Parliament for Akatsi South and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has donated GH¢2,000 each to victims of a destructive rainstorm in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region.
The gesture, totaling GH¢100,000, formed part of the MP’s ongoing efforts to provide relief to his constituents, many of whom were rendered homeless by the disaster.
Mr Daniel Gidi, Akatsi South Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said additional support would be extended to other severely affected victims in due course.
“We have conducted a thorough assessment to ascertain the exact number of residents who were affected,” he noted.
The rainstorm, which struck on Sunday, March 30, destroyed giant billboards, uprooted trees and electricity poles, and left some individuals with minor injuries. More than 315 people, including several households, were affected.
Earlier, Mr Ahiafor had donated 70 bundles of roofing sheets and 1,700 bags of cement with support from other partners.
Speaking during the brief presentation ceremony, Mr Ahiafor expressed gratitude to the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for assisting him with the cash donation. He assured that more support would be mobilised for victims who were yet to benefit.
He further appealed to the public and benevolent organisations to join efforts in alleviating the plight of the victims.
The event was witnessed by Mr Daniel Dagba, the Municipal Chief Executive of Akatsi South, as well as regional and municipal officials of NADMO, the Ghana National Fire Service, assembly members and other stakeholders.
Some beneficiaries who spoke to the GNA expressed appreciation to Mr Ahiafor and the leadership of Parliament for the timely support.
