AJGCI mourns Environment Minister, lauds his environmental governance legacy

Accra, Aug. 07, GNA – The Alliance for Just Green Climate Innovations (AJGCI) says it is saddened by the tragic death of Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohamed,
Minister of Environment, Science and Technology.

The group eulogised him as a visionary leader who transformed Ghana’s environmental governance.

Dr. Murtala Mohammed and seven others died on Wednesday, August 6, in a tragic military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

Those who perished
Included Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defense, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) , Mr. Samuel Aboagye, NDC official, and the crew made of three military personnel.

In a statement signed by Madam Angelina Ama Tutuah Mensah, the organisation’s spokesperson, the AJGCI said the late Minister made remarkable strides in pushing forward Ghana’s climate justice and environmental sustainability agenda during his short tenure in office.

“Dr. Murtala Mohammed was a transformative leader and a fierce advocate for inclusive climate action. Since his appointment in February 2025, he spearheaded innovative environmental policies, championed the adoption of artificial intelligence and renewable energy, and worked to ensure the inclusion of women and marginalized communities in climate-related decision-making,” the statement said.

The AJGCI, which works to promote sustainable innovation and community-led climate solutions, said it was privileged to partner with the Minister in promoting clean energy and innovation hubs in rural areas.

His openness to partnership and his commitment to collaborative action, the group said, had left an indelible mark on Ghana’s climate movement.

“He believed deeply in shared responsibility and was a strong ally in our efforts to create a greener, fairer future for all Ghanaians. His legacy will continue to inspire our work,” the statement added.

The AJGCI condoled withDr. Mohammed’s family, the Government of Ghana, the NDC, and the people of Tamale Central and the Dagbon Traditional Area.

The group also paid tribute to the other victims of the crash, including the military crew: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

“May their souls rest in eternal peace, and may their legacies forever guide us toward a more sustainable and just future,” the AJGCI said.
