Voting progresses in Ablekuma North re-run election

Accra, July 11, GNA – Voting is currently underway in the Ablekuma-North re-run election where about 6,839 voters are expected to cast their ballot across 19 polling stations.

The re-run follows a controversial outcome in the December 2024 general election, during which the results for the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat were fiercely contested by the NPP and the NDC.

Allegations of irregularities and inconsistencies in vote collation led to several petitions and calls for a review.

After months of political tension and stakeholder dialogue, the EC resolved to re-run the election in 19 polling stations, where discrepancies were deemed significant enough to potentially alter the overall outcome.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to the 19 polling centres showed a slow turnout, with some voters arriving early to participate in the exercise.

Besides, security has been beefed-up with many Police personnel across the 19 affected polling stations to maintain order and ensure peaceful voting.

Also, many party big-wigs from both National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been spotted at various polling centres.

These include the two parliamentary candidates, Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC and Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie of the NPP engaging with constituents and observing the process.

So far the re-run Ablekuma-North election has been peaceful and orderly except an incident where Mr Banahene Agyekum, a reporter with EIB Network, was allegedly slapped by a Police officer while covering the election at the Church of Pentecost North Odorkor 2 polling station.
