Tema, July 10, GNA – The United Nations Global Compact Network Ghana will launch the United Nations Global Compact Ocean Centres-Ghana in Accra under the distinguished patronage of the United Nations Global Compact and the Lloyd’s Register Foundation.

Dr Emmanuel Kofi Mbiah, the Country Lead for the Ocean Centres in Ghana, disclosing this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the launch, which would be held by the end of July, follows the global launch of the United Nations Global Compact Ocean Centres at the just-ended Third United Nations Oceans Conference held in Nice, France.

Dr Mbiah said Ghana was selected among seven countries of the Global South to pioneer the establishment of the Ocean Centres.

He said the countries selected from the Global South were Bangladesh, Brazil, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, and the Philippines.

He stated that through a series of workshops and multi-stakeholder engagement, Ocean Centres would foster partnership and collaboration among the public and private sectors to place safety at the heart of sustainability.

“It is expected that this initiative will lead to the development of locally inspired policies and standards that further the attainment of the SDGs, especially goal 14,” he said.

Dr Mbiah indicated that for a start, the Ocean Centres would focus on four thematic areas in the blue economy, namely Ports and Shipping, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Blue Finance and Investment, and Offshore Renewable Energy.

He called on stakeholders to join the multi-stakeholder engagement to foster locally led solutions in furtherance of an inclusive blue economy that takes into account people, planet, and prosperity.
