Bangkok, July 28, (dpa/GNA) – Following the escalation in the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, the prime ministers of both countries are set to travel to Malaysia for talks on Monday.
The spokesman for the Thai Foreign Ministry, Nikorndej Balankura, confirmed the talks to journalists, without providing details.
It was initially unclear whether Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s interim Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai would meet in person.
The clashes concern a decades-old border dispute between the two neighbours. However, what exactly triggered the escalation remains unclear.
Malaysia holds the chair of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had already spoken with his counterparts from Thailand and Cambodia on Thursday, shortly after the fighting began, and offered himself as a mediator in the conflict.
