Accra, July 4, GNA – The government has announced plans to establish Climate and Sustainability Units in all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to mitigate climate change risks and support economic innovation.
The move forms part of a broader national vision to mainstream climate resilience and sustainability into Ghana’s development agenda.
Mr Seidu Issifu, the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, made this known when he paid a courtesy call on Mr Tong Defa, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana.
The meeting in Accra provided a platform for both countries to strengthen collaboration on shared climate priorities and explore opportunities for technical exchange and diplomatic cooperation.
Mr Issifu said the government also planned to set up a National Climate and Sustainability Hub to serve as a centre of excellence in research, policy innovation, and investment promotion for the sub-region.
The Ministry would soon roll out a large-scale solar rooftop project targeting public institutions, as part of efforts to transition to clean energy and reduce the country’s carbon footprint.
Mr Issifu said the Office of the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, established by the President, serves as the central coordinating body for climate policies and actions across all sectors and levels of government.
Ambassador Tong Defa welcomed Ghana’s climate efforts and pledged China’s support for key initiatives.
He said China had shifted its investment priorities from thermal energy to renewables such as solar and wind, and highlighted the active role of companies like Huawei in Ghana’s solar energy sector.
He shared China’s experience in electric mobility, carbon trading, and desertification control, while underscoring the potential benefits of technical exchanges and capacity-building for Ghana.
The Ambassador extended an invitation to Ghanaian officials to participate in upcoming short-term training programmes in climate change, agriculture, and the digital economy in China.
Both parties agreed on the importance of sustained engagement and institutional partnerships and discussed strategies to deepen cooperation between Ghana’s climate office and relevant Chinese ministries.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advance climate action, build resilient communities, and promote sustainable development through strategic South–South cooperation.
