GCAA, Boundary Commission deepen airspace cooperation

Accra, July 18, GNA – Brigadier General Anthony Ntem, Commissioner-General of the Ghana Boundary Commission, on Thursday visited the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to initiate collaboration on airspace boundary issues at Kotoka International Airport.

Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, Acting Director-General of GCAA, welcomed the delegation and acknowledged the role of the Commission in resolving boundary issues affecting the Accra Flight Information Region (FIR).

He said strengthening collaboration would enhance GCAA’s mandate to regulate Ghana’s air transport sector, including economic oversight and the provision of air navigation services within the FIR.

Brig. Gen. Ntem outlined the Commission’s functions, including airspace delimitation and dispute resolution involving neighbouring countries.

“When we have issues with any neighbouring country’s airspace boundary, that is when we come in, and Ghana Civil Aviation Authority is one of the members of the Airspace Boundary Technical Committee…going forward, you will be collaborating with us on airspace boundary issues,” he said.

He added that the Commission was also responsible for land and maritime boundary matters and presented Rev. Arthur with a copy of the Commission’s new enabling legislation, Act 1123, which replaced Act 795.

Rev. Arthur assured the Commission of GCAA’s full cooperation.

“We pledge to be very supportive of your cause because we’re one nation…It’s like being branches of one big tree.

“We may grow in different directions but come from a common root and stem. It doesn’t matter how we have fared in the past; we believe that the opportunity exists to work in closer collaboration and learn about each other’s industry,” he said.

He said GCAA would provide the Commission with relevant technical charts and airspace coordinates to support its work.

Mr. Theophilus Adonis Aryee Ago, Acting Deputy Director-General (Technical), said the Authority would deepen engagement with the Commission to enhance understanding of Ghana’s shared air boundaries.
