Washington, July 4, (dpa/GNA) – At least 13 people have died in severe flooding in the US state of Texas, authorities said on Friday.

Children from a summer camp in Kerr County, north-west of San Antonio, were also missing.

Heavy rainfall early on Friday morning triggered flooding in the state.

Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick ,had initially spoken of six to 10 bodies, adding that the situation was ongoing, and there was still no overview.

Kerr County Sherrif Larry L. Leitha later stated that at least 13 died. According to the governor, the dead include adults and children. Some of the bodies were found in cars that had been washed away.

Citing a “catastrophic flooding event,” the police had earlier warned residents to stay away from streams and rivers, especially around the Guadalupe River – and to seek safety in higher areas, in a Facebook post.
