Kumasi, July 31, GNA – The Armed Forces Senior High Technical School (AFSHTS) in Kumasi, has qualified to participate in the finals of the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).
With a total score of 61 points, the AFSHTS, represented by Ms Lois Eshun, Ohene Adjei Talker-Davis and Israel Hayford, exceeded the needed score of 40 points to qualify during the 2025 regional qualifiers competition held in Kumasi.
This makes it the 11th time the school has qualified to the national level of the NSMQ competition.
The other competing schools, the Wesley Girls SHS, also qualified with 42 points, whiles Konadu Yiadom Catholic SHS and Aduman SHS, who scored 16 points and 13 points respectively, did not qualify to the national level.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview, Master Talker-Davis expressed great joy in qualifying to the national level and gave thanks to God.
He indicated that their total score was beyond their expectations as they only intended to attain the qualifying points of 40.
Master Talker-Davis, a 19-year-old form three Science Student, said the journey had not been easy as they had limited resources at their disposal to prepare them for the entire competition.

He noted that their achievement in the regional competition was an indication that they could get to the quarter finals if they worked harder and get access to the books needed to study.
Ms Patience A. Donkor, also a 19-year-old, form three science student and a member of the NSMQ of AFSHTS, called on philanthropists, the parents association of the school, old students of the school and other stakeholders to come to their aid as they prepare to the national level.
“We need NSMQ Riddle books, Biological Science book with a lot of terminologies, NSMQ Advance Shortcut books, a clock, extra food and committed teachers,” she appealed.
Ms Donkor explained that although the NSMQ team had a couple of teachers who assisted them to study, they needed more committed and dedicated teachers.
Mr Hud K. A Sulaiman, the AFSHTS NSMQ Coordinator, who confirmed the availability of inadequate study materials and resources, hoped the team would make it to the quarter finals to get seeded for 2026.
He applauded the team for their hard work and achievement in making it to the national level and acknowledged the support from the headmaster and the administrative board to the team.
Mr Sulaiman called for financial support to sponsor the team throughout the competition as the school did its part.
