Accra, June 4, GNA – The Public Affairs Directorate of the University of Ghana (UG) has paid a courtesy call on Mr Samuel Osei-Frempong, the News Editor of the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

The call was to strengthen the long-standing relationship between the two institutions, appreciate the Agency’s work and share ideas on contemporary issues.

Dr Elizier Taiba Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director, Public Affairs Directorate, said the UG launched its five-year Strategic Plan (2024-2029) with five strategic priorities on July 17, 2024, and the visit was in line with the fourth strategic priority, which is engagements and partnerships.

She said as part of deepening their collaboration with media houses, they needed to call on the News Editor since GNA was a key partner that had held the University in high esteem.

“GNA is always present at our programmes and we really appreciate that. We usually invite several media houses to our programmes and we are always sure to see GNA at each event. GNA has been a loyal partner to the University of Ghana and we appreciate the partnership. We look forward to continuing this wonderful collaboration,” she said.

Other members of the delegation included Ms Pascaline Songsore, Senior Assistant Registrar; Ms Victoria Anim, Assistant Registrar and Mrs Pamela Korsah, Senior Administrative Assistant.

Mr Osei-Frempong, commended Dr Ameyaw-Buronyah and her team, adding that GNA was a state institution that worked in the interest of Ghana, promoting State institutions to become viable and development oriented.

“GNA knows the importance of news, understands how a news agency must shape society and build a country devoid of any sensationalism. We have a Ghana to protect and so we shall not publish anything untoward to make Ghana and institutions like the University of Ghana to suffer,” the News Editor said.

Mr Osei-Frempong said the University must be protected and projected for development of the thousands of Ghanaians they trained, adding that it must continue to shape behaviour and thought and change society for the better.

“UG, undoubtedly is our DNA as a country and we need to make it great. It is our premier university, in fact, it is our pre-Madonna. We are ever ready to work with you. You can come to us on any developmental issues so that we shape society and create value together,” he said.

He said: “I am interested in research, especially research into the food we eat and the clothes we wear to see the tendencies of cancerous conditions that come along with them.”

The UG Strategic Plan from 2024-2029 has five strategic priorities being transformative student experience, impactful research, commitment to faculty and staff, engagement and partnership and sustainable resource mobilisation and stewardship.

The University holds an annual open day event for prospective students and the public to learn about the University and its various programmes.

The event offers opportunities to explore the campuses, meet faculty members, students and gain insight into the University’s academic and extracurricular activities.

Various activities are also run by the University to realise its strategic priorities.
