Sunyani-Berekum drivers unhappy about recurring incidents of armed robberies

Sunyani, (Bono), June 12, GNA – Commercial drivers and passengers using the Sunyani-Berekum highway have called on the police to beef up personnel presence to control the recurring trend of armed robberies on the stretch.

According to the drivers, armed robbers had been terrorizing them and passengers, snatching their mobile phones, and other valuables.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Mr Yaw Kusi, one of the drivers, recounted his sad experience of a similar robbery attack on the highway.

He said the incident happened when “the armed robbers emerged from the bush around 1800 hours at a particular spot on the stretch which has no mobile phone network coverage, making it impossible for us to call for assistance”.

Other passengers who also expressed their frustrations told the GNA that the frequent armed robbery attack on the highway remained challenging for them, a situation they added discouraged some of the drivers from using the highway in the evenings.

One of the passengers spoke to the GNA on condition of anonymity, described the situation as frustrating, and called on the police to do something and to bring the situation under control.
