Wenchi, (Bono), June 21, GNA – Stakeholders have commenced work on the reshaping of portions of the Wenchi-Wa highway, one of the busiest stretches in the Bono Region, to stem frequent crashes and vehicular breakdowns on the highway.
At a meeting held at Wenchi in the Bono Region, the Wenchi branch of the Tipper Truck Drivers Association agreed to voluntarily release some of their trucks for the work.
The Wenchi Municipal Assembly and the Wenchi Traditional Council are also providing earth moving machines and gravel respectively for the resurfacing and re-graveling works.
Attended by other stakeholders, including commercial drivers, the meeting sought to deliberate on finding ways of putting the highway in good shape to control rising crashes and needless deaths, which was now a public outcry in the area.
Nonetheless, Alhaji Alhassan Adams, the Chairman of the Wenchi branch of the Tipper Truck Drivers Association, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of the meeting that the highway required major rehabilitation works.
He said: “The numerous potholes developed on the stretch have turned into manholes” and thereby obstructing driving and causing crashes on the highway, one of the busiest in the Bono Region.
Alhaji Adams said the deplorable condition of the highway was leading to frequent vehicular breakdowns of heavy-duty trucks and exposing commercial drivers and commuters to dangers.
Mr Henry Ameworwor, the Presiding Member of the Wenchi Municipal Assembly, expressed appreciation to the support and commitment of the stakeholders, saying more of such assistance was required to bring the development of the Municipality to the next level.
