Cape Coast, June 19, GNA – One person died, and five people were critically injured in a multi-vehicle crash at the East Gate of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) along the Cape Coast – Takoradi Highway Thursday afternoon.
The accident involved a tipper truck with the registration number GN 5701–19, a Honda CRV registered as CR 329–20, a red Nissan Sentra with the number CR 1756 – 12 and a tricycle (Pragya) registered M-20–CR 1262.
Information from the Regional Command of Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has it that the fatal crash was caused by the tipper truck driver who was driving carelessly.
A CCTV footage that has been released captured the moment the tipper truck wiped the cars off the UCC East Gate intersection at 12:48 hours.
The two cars and the Pragya were biding their time at the intersection to join the main road when the truck suddenly emerged from nowhere and ran them over.
The victims of the accident, five males and a female, were rescued by eyewitnesses and transported to the UCC Hospital where one male was confirmed dead.
The deceased was a passenger in the Nissan Sentra which was the first to be crashed.
The rest are, however, responding to treatment.
ADO1 Ebenezer Fiifi Dadzie, the Deputy Regional PRO, confirming the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), indicated that they received a call on the accident at 13:02 hours and got there at 13:09 hours.
But all the victims had already been rescued and rushed to the hospital when they arrived at the scene.
He explained that preliminary investigations suggested that the tipper truck driver, through careless driving, caused the accident.
The Honda CRV and tipper truck were partially damaged, but the Nissan Sentra and the tricycle were totalled beyond redemption.
The road has since been cleared by the Fire Service and the police to allow for free flow of vehicles.
