Accra, June 30, GNA – Madam Jane Amerley Oku, the Chief Executive Officer of the Janok Foundation, a community-based non-governmental organisation has urged the public to read the front-of-pack food labels to make rightful choices to avoid contracting diseases.
“Making a smart choice in what we eat helps us prevent illnesses. Reading the front-of-pack label also guides parents towards better nutrition. It is important to make the right choice to know what you eat,” she admonished.
Madam Oku gave the advice at a community engagement organised by Our Community Focus (OCOF), a community development organisation in the municipality in collaboration with the Global Dignity Forum.
She said the front-of-pack warning label was a mandatory policy for canned/packaged food producers and that there was the need for the citizenry to read to know the level of ingredient contents such as sugar, salt, oil and the rest to avoid illnesses.
She said diseases like non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are in ascendency and killing several people through individual lifestyles and to prevent them needed consciousness of what he or she consumed.
The front-of-pack warning label sensitisation campaign is being supported by the SEND-Ghana, the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics with the hashtag #Let’s act now!
