Iran says nine Islamic State militants executed

Tehran, Jun. 10, (dpa/GNA) – Iran’s judiciary has executed nine individuals convicted of terrorism, according to the state-affiliated Mizan news agency on Tuesday.

The individuals were accused of being members of the jihadist militant group Islamic State, although their identities have not been publicly disclosed.

They were reportedly arrested around seven years ago during a military operation in western Iran and later sentenced to death on charges of “waging war against God” and armed rebellion.

Authorities also accused the group of planning a terrorist attack.

The executions come amid fierce criticism from human rights groups.

According to Amnesty International, at least 972 people were executed in Iran last year. Activists have repeatedly condemned the Islamic Republic’s use of the death penalty, citing concerns over due process, lack of transparency, and unfair trials.
