Sixty-nine year-old druggist jailed 17 years

Sunyani, May 02, GNA – A Circuit Court in Sunyani has sentenced a-69-year-old druggist to 17 years in prison for sale of expired drugs, contrary to the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).

Additionally, the court presided by Mr Sylvester Nii Okai Ablorh imposed GHC120,000 fine on the convict Nana Agyemang Badu, operator of an over-the-counter drugs store at Chiraa in the Sunyani West Municipality.

In default, the convict would serve an additional two-year prison term. When the case was heard on Tuesday April 29, 2025, Police Inspector Sylvia Serwaa, the prosecutor, told the court that somewhere 2022, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) undertook an exercise at Chiraa and discovered quantities of expired drugs at the convict’s drug store.

The case was handed over to the Bono Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID)and the convict was arrested and arraigned before the court. Since then, the case had gone through adjournments, after the convict had pleaded not guilty.

However, at its hearing, the court found him (convict) guilty and sentenced him accordingly.
