Accra, May 31, GNA – Ghanaian sprinter Abdul-Rasheed Saminu has set a new national record following his impressive outing at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Friday.
Saminu’s 9.86 seconds makes him the fastest man in the world this year and has secured qualification for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
He breaks Benjamin Azamati’s record of 9.90 seconds that was set in March 2021 and secures qualification for the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo.
Saminu’s new feat, which represent his personal best, makes him one of Ghana’s top sprinters and a medal prospect in the future.
The 27-year-old is also a key member of Ghana’s 4×100 relay team, who have also qualified for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Saminu, who is a student at the University of South Florida, represented Ghana at the Paris Olympics, where he progressed to the semi-finals in the men’s 100m race.
