Kumasi, April 19, GNA – A young man, suspected to have attempted to steal an earthen wire (cable) at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Substation at Adoato in the Ashanti Region has been electrocuted to death.
The deceased, believed to be in his late thirties, was with the cable and a plier when his lifeless body was found in the early hours of Saturday, April 19, 2025.
Speaking with Ghana News Agency, Mr Benjamin Obeng Antwi, the Ashanti West Public Relations Officer of the ECG, said the Police had taken the body to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
He observed that the incident led to power outages in some areas in Greater Kumasi and beyond.
Mr Antwi expressed concern about the rising cases of vandalism and theft of ECG installations such as transformers, cables, protective equipment, and others needed for stable power supply in recent times.
“Lately, vandalising of ECG transformers, cables, protective equipment and other installations needed for stable power supply has been on the rise in the Ashanti Region,” Mr Antwi noted.
He mentioned Adoato Substation, Adum Central Business Centre, and others as areas where the rise in vandalism of ECG installations were being recorded.
Mr Antwi on behalf of the management of the ECG cautioned citizens against illegal activities which could lead to death, interruption of stable power supply and financial losses to the country.
He appealed to the public and all stakeholders to help fight vandalism and theft of ECG installations by reporting all suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
“You can also lodge complaints on the ECG PowerApp, on our social media handles @ECGghOfficial, contact us on 0302611611 or visit our nearest office,” he said.
