Keta Central, (V/R), April 20, GNA, The Keta African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Basic School and the Keta Roman Catholic (RC) Mixed Basic School have emerged as champions in the recently held Keta Easter Homecoming Quiz Competition.

The initiative aimed at promoting literacy and improving educational standards in the community.

The event brought together four schools from Keta Central and its surrounding areas: Keta EP Basic School, Keta AME Zion Basic School, Keta RC Mixed School, and Adzido M/A Basic School.

The competition featured all three levels of Basic education: Lower Primary, Upper Primary, and Junior High School.

The competition was structured around innovative and engaging rounds such as: Reading aloud, where contestants read selected passages, judged on pronunciation, punctuation, and fluency.

At the end of the lower primary contest, Keta Zion won with 79 points while Keta RC mixed came second with 68 points, followed by Adzido Basic and Keta EP Basics with 62 and 43 points respectively

Keta AME Zion School won the upper primary session again with 87 points, with Adzido MA Basic School coming second with 65 points, Keta RC mixed, and Keta EP had third and fourth positions with 63 and 34 points each

Mr. Dela Odamsen, Chief Librarian at the Keta Library and Secretary to the Festival Education Committee, explained to the Ghana News Agency the purpose behind this unique approach to the quiz.

“We planned to do something different with a specific goal: to promote a culture of reading among our young learners. We’ve realised that reading is not a priority for many students, so we introduced this new method to make it more engaging.”

All participants, including both winners and non-winners, received prizes such as stationery sets, exercise books, mathematical instruments, and certificates, and other prizes donated by various sponsors.

Madam Ado, one of the quiz mistresses, encouraged parents present to support their children by providing reading materials at home to further enhance their literacy skills.

“Parental support is key. Let us invest in reading materials so our children can continue to develop strong reading habits,” she urged.

Participants received prizes.
