Incident at Adventist SHS: NaSIA calls for stricter security measures

Accra, April 10, GNA – The National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) Thursday called for stringent security and disciplinary measures to safeguard the well-being of students.

The call follows the discharge of a firearm by a 16-year-old male second-year student at the Adventist Senior High School at Bantama in the Ashanti Region, on Friday, April 4, 2025, resulting in a serious eye injury to a female classmate.

A statement issued by the Authority and copied to the Ghana News Agency recommended an immediate closure of unauthorised access points at Racecourse and Abrepo junction, following its investigations into the matter.

NaSIA called for strengthened access control through body scans, identity checks, and visitor registration at entry points, recruitment of additional trained security personnel, and enforcement of a comprehensive code of conduct.

The Authority also recommended an evacuation of encroachers from the school premises in coordination with local authorities.

“This unfortunate event highlights the pressing need for stricter security and disciplinary measures in our schools,” the statement said, calling for regular monitoring visits to ensure the recommendations were adhered to.

The Authority assured the public of its commitment to safeguarding the safety and well-being of all students and staff across pre-tertiary institutions in the country.

It called for early report of any suspicious activities or procedures in the school, emphasising collaborative actions to address such incidents in the various schools.

Investigations by NaSIA disclosed that the firearm belonged to the student’s father.

The statement noted that the incident occurred in the classroom during break hours and was not preceded by any known conflict.

It said there was insufficient security staff-to-student ratio and gaps in access control and external encroachment at the school.

Meanwhile, the school, in collaboration with its guidance and counselling unit, has since conducted a trauma-support session for the students.
