Accra, April 15, GNA – The Ghana Chamber of Mines has called for an open dialogue between the government and industry stakeholders following the rejection of Gold Fields’ application to renew its mining lease for the Damang Mine.

In a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, the Chamber expressed concern over the government’s decision, warning that it could have significant implications for investor confidence and the long-term stability of Ghana’s mining sector.

While acknowledging the government’s right to grant or deny mining leases, the Chamber emphasized the need for constructive engagement to fully understand the rationale behind the decision and to seek an amicable resolution.

“We therefore call upon all parties involved to engage in open and transparent discussions to understand the underlying reasons for this decision and to work towards an amicable resolution that is fair, equitable, pragmatic, and in the best interest of all stakeholders,” the statement said.

It said Gold Fields’ Damang Mine has been a key asset in Ghana’s mining landscape, contributing to employment, local development, and national revenue.

The Chamber noted that in 2024 alone, gold exports earned the country about US$11.5 billion which was more than half of Ghana’s total export earnings.

The Chamber cautioned that decisions such as the Damang lease rejection risked sending negative signals to both local and international investors.

It stressed the importance of maintaining a predictable and transparent regulatory environment to sustain growth in the mining sector.

“It is imperative that all concerns are addressed in a manner that upholds due process, respects contractual obligations where applicable, and provides clarity and certainty for mining companies operating in Ghana,” the statement said.

The Chamber urged stakeholders to resolve the matter urgently to preserve Ghana’s standing as a premier mining destination on the continent.
