Sunyani, (Bono), April 23, GNA-Mr Joseph Addae Akwaboa, the Bono Regional Minister says he has ordered the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to enact a byelaw to help stem the growing trend of commercial sex work in the Municipality.
He said the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) was also working strategically with the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to apprehend and prosecute offenders.
The Regional Minister said the RCC, and key stakeholders were also putting in place pragmatic measures to clamp down on the sex workers who had influx the regional capital.
Though, Mr Akwaboa said the task ahead remained herculean, the RCC would collaborate effectively with other stakeholders to fight the sex work and other social ills and called for media support to also bring the rising trend of drug abuse and peddling among young people in the municipality.
The Regional Minister was responding to question on actions being taken by the RCC to tackle the growing commercial sex work activities in the capital when he interacted with the media in Sunyani.
Describing the situation as worrying, Mr Akwaboa said the RCC alone could not shoulder the responsibility of tackling drug abuse and commercial sex work activities and called for collective approaches.
“It is difficult to identify a commercial sex worker on the wayside or street. It has legalities, however those who provide services at brothels and some recognised places can be easily identified and dealt with,” he stated.
Nonetheless, Mr Akwaboa said with the help of the NIB, the growing commercial sex activities in the capital could be brought under control.
