Bolgatanga, April 21, GNA – The Most Reverend Alfred Agyenta, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga, has offered a special Easter prayer for the return of lasting peace in Bawku and its environs.
He prayed to God, during the celebration of the Easter, to touch the hearts of the feuding factions to give peace a chance.
Bawku has been battling with chieftaincy conflict for decades leading to loss of lives and destruction of properties.
The protracted communal conflict has affected social and economic activities such as access to education, healthcare and has brought economic activities to a significant standstill.
Since its re-emergence in November 2021, more than 300 people have lost their lives and the conflict in recent weeks has intensified and extended to other areas such as Binduri and Walewale.
The bishop, presiding over a Holy Mass as part of activities marking this year’s Easter at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in Bolgatanga, led parishioners to offer a special prayer for peace in Bawku and other conflict affected areas in the country.
The Most Reverend Agyenta prayed: “We want to make a special prayer for our brothers and sisters in Bawku, Binduri and other areas affected by the conflict that they will embrace peace.
“We also pray for the mediation team and other stakeholders that they will work to bring lasting peace to the area.”
Delivering a homily during the Mass, Bishop Agyenta stressed that nothing could be achieved with violence and conflict.
“The passion of Jesus Christ leading to Easter signifies that nothing can be achieved through violence,” he said.
He admonished warring factions to eschew violence and emulate the example of Jesus Christ who never engaged in violence even at the point of death.
He said the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ was a strong message to Christians to believe that there was life beyond this earth and urged them to live righteously.
