Six killed in suspected al-Shabaab attack on police camp in Kenya

Nairobi, Mar. 23, (dpa/GNA) – Six police officers were killed in an attack by suspected al-Shabaab militants on a police camp in north-eastern Kenya, authorities said on Sunday.

Armed fighters targeted the camp in Garissa County, near the Somali border. The attackers used assault rifles and anti-tank weapons, injuring four other officers, police said.

Police said two of the militants were killed, while the rest fled with weapons seized from the camp.

Kenya’s border region with Somalia frequently faces attacks by the Islamist Al-Shabaab militia, which is based in the neighboring country.

Politicians and activists have condemned the persistent violence by extremists, while also criticizing the heavy-handed actions of security forces against civilians in the region.
